Prompted by the development of the Theory of Challenge and Threat States in Athletes (Jones et al, 2009), recent years has witnessed a considerable increase in research examining challenge and threat in sport. This manuscript provides a critical review of the literature examining challenge and threat in sport, tracing its historical development and some of the current empirical ambiguities. In an attempt to reconcile some of these ambiguities, and utilising neurobiological evidence associated with approach- and avoidance-motivation (cf. Elliot & Covington, (...) 2001), this paper draws upon the Evaluative Space Model (ESM: Cacioppo et al., 1997) and considers the implications for understanding challenge and threat in sport. For example, rather than see challenge and threat as opposite ends of a single bipolar continuum, the ESM implies that individuals could be (1) challenged, (2) threatened, (3) challenged and threatened, or (4) neither challenged or threatened by a particular stimulus. From this perspective it could be argued that the appraisal of some sport situations as both challenging and threatening could be advantageous, whereas the current literature seems to imply that the appraisal of stress as a threat is maladaptive for performance. In drawing upon the ESM, we outline the Evaluative Space Approach to Challenge and Threat and provide several testable hypotheses for advancing understanding of challenge and threat (in sport). We also outline a number of cardiovascular and experiential measures that can be used to examine these hypotheses. In sum, this paper provides a significant theoretical, empirical and practical contribution to our understanding of challenge and threat (in sport). (shrink)

Où se trouve le sérieux? L'auteur se pose cette question peu commune, et se met en quête d'une réponse. Il propose une articulation du sérieux selon les modes épistémologique, esthétique et éthique, pour l'approcher indirectement par le feint, le comique et le léger. Il s'attaque d'abord au problème que pose une quête du sérieux par le " feint ", ce qui le conduit à des interprétations originales du doute cartésien, du langage philosophique et de la connaissance scientifique : il distingue (...) le feint du fictif et du faux, mais constate aussi que le feint a tendance à se transformer en l'un ou en l'autre. L'auteur s'aventure ensuite dans le domaine esthétique où, à partir d'une critique de la théorie bergsonienne du rire, il développe sa propre interprétation du comique ; il soutient que la musique est l'art relativement le plus sérieux, mais que le sérieux comme tel est absent de l'art. Passant à la morale, il se voit obligé d'abord de s'expliquer avec les existentialistes français, ennemis déclarés du sérieux, puis, après une franche appréciation du sérieux de notre époque, d'admettre finalement que le léger y joue un rôle essentiel aussi. Distinguant en plus le sérieux du fanatique, l'auteur tente de préciser les rapports entre le sérieux et la foi, la Bible, et la pensée kierkegaardienne. Il conclut que la philosophie, et plus particulièrement la métaphysique, est le ressort du sérieux, mais que le philosophe est tenu par son sérieux même de chercher toujours plus loin. Le livre est écrit sous la forme de carnets, dans un style clair et engageant ; non dépourvu d'humour, il s'adresse à tout lecteur philosophiquement averti. (shrink)

In a pioneering book, Philosophy of Microbiology, Maureen O’Malley argues for the philosophical importance of microbes through an examination of their impact on ecosystems, evolution, biological classification, collaborative behavior, and multicellular organisms. She identifies many understudied conceptual issues in the study of microbes. If philosophers follow her lead, the philosophy of biology will be expanded and enriched.

We report the identification of a recurrent, 520-kb 16p12.1 microdeletion associated with childhood developmental delay. The microdeletion was detected in 20 of 11,873 cases compared with 2 of 8,540 controls and replicated in a second series of 22 of 9,254 cases compared with 6 of 6,299 controls. Most deletions were inherited, with carrier parents likely to manifest neuropsychiatric phenotypes compared to non-carrier parents. Probands were more likely to carry an additional large copy-number variant when compared to matched controls. The clinical (...) features of individuals with two mutations were distinct from and/or more severe than those of individuals carrying only the co-occurring mutation. Our data support a two-hit model in which the 16p12.1 microdeletion both predisposes to neuropsychiatric phenotypes as a single event and exacerbates neurodevelopmental phenotypes in association with other large deletions or duplications. Analysis of other microdeletions with variable expressivity indicates that this two-hit model might be more generally applicable to neuropsychiatric disease. © 2010 Nature America, Inc. Un riche corpus de peintures, d'inscriptions et de monuments votifs nous renseigne sur les modalités de la célébration des Compitalia à Délos aux IIe et Ier siècles av. J.-C. On s'intéresse d'abord aux peintures exécutées sur les murs extérieurs d'une vingtaine de maisons ou magasins et à l'intérieur de trois d'entre eux, qui figurent les dieux et les rites (sacrifice, ludt) de cette vieille fête romaine. Un nouvel examen de ces images et la confrontation avec les témoignages iconographiques et littéraires (...) d'Italie amènent à corriger et compléter le catalogue réalisé par M. Bulard en 1926 et complété par Ph. Bruneau en 1970, tout en remettant en cause les théories élaborées par chacun d'eux. Il apparaît notamment qu'Hercule et d'autres divinités figuraient avec les Lares dans le panthéon des Compitalia, que les autels et peintures étaient commandités par les propriétaires des maisons pour des sacrifices privés et que la fête subit un certain nombre d'influences locales relatives aux dieux, aux rites, au lieu de célébration et à l'origine des fidèles. Dans un second temps, le réexamen des inscriptions et monuments votifs de l'Agora des Compétaliastes permet de montrer que les Compitalia furent également célébrées dans le cadre officiel de la communauté des Italici : un sanctuaire des Lares constitué d'un autel, d'une tholos abritant les images des Lares et de statues et autels d'autres divinités était confié au collège des Compétaliastes, qui organisaient le sacrifice ainsi que probablement les ludi compitalicii. Bien des choses de ce livre m'ont plu : que ce soit en Corse, qu'il soit question d'ancêtres et de filiations, qu'il soit question d'enfants qui savent dès très tôt qu'ils quitteront (...) leur famille, non tant par le corps que par l'esprit. Au centre de l’Agora des Compétaliastes à Délos, une immense base à degrés de marbre, communément appelée le «Monument carré », a été considérée comme un autel, une base de statue ou la fondation d’un petit temple dorique. L’étude architecturale a permis d’identifier vingt-deux blocs errants et de restituer un pilier monumental d’une dizaine de mètres de hauteur. Au-dessus des trois degrés, le fût (large de 3,50 m) était constitué d’orthostates surmontés d’assises alternativement basses et hautes et couronné par un (...) entablement ionique. Ce monument ressemble étonnamment aux piliers attalides de Delphes et d’Athènes mais sa construction, située après 125 av. J.-C., doit plutôt être mise en relation avec la puissance des Italici dont les sanctuaires étaient établis en ce lieu : bien que la dédicace n’ait pas été conservée, il n’est pas exclu que le pilier ait porté la statue en char d’un magistrat romain. Les individus cherchent leurs marques dans de grands ensembles flottants : que faire pour vivre bien? Rompre avec tel ou tel formalisme ambiant? Durcir une ritualité traditionnelle? Les sentiments peuvent être très mêlés : l'identité de la personne humaine sera-t-elle renforcée grâce à une communauté de forte appartenance? Mais cette recherche d'identification n'est-elle pas habitée par la crainte d'un étouffement au sein d'un vivre-en-commun? Des pas de géant ont été accomplis pour critiquer la primauté de la communauté traditionnelle sur l'individu, (...) mais pas partout. Et l'individu a rencontré l'Etat sur son chemin, ce qui renvoie au fameux dilemme de J.-J. Rousseau : homme ou citoyen? La critique d'un vivre-en-commun selon des normes et des valeurs a pu s'appuyer sur l'universalité des Droits de l'homme, malgré l'ambiguïté de ces derniers. Le philosophe A. Clair met en valeur un tiers droit, celui de la fraternité. Dialoguant avec l'œuvre de H. Arendt, l'auteur approfondit notamment les relations entre l'autorité, la tradition et la religion ; de même qu'il discute la pensée communautarienne et l'œuvre de A. McIntyre : A. Clair entreprend de critiquer l'individualisme libéral et n'hésite pas à méditer à nouveaux frais la thèse de Machiavel sur la violence comme fondatrice des institutions. Qu'en est-il de la singularité historique de la communauté comme présence de l'humanité? Sans jamais prôner un quelconque communautarisme, l'auteur reprend, selon une argumentation courageuse, la question de la tension entre norme de vie bonne et vie en société. (shrink)

Du printemps 2020 à l’été 2021, j’ai accompagné Baba Fotso Toukam Junior dans l’écriture de son récit de migration depuis le Cameroun jusqu’au Pays basque ( Sur le chemin de ses rêves, éditions Dacres, 2021). Dans cet article, je reviens sur notre collaboration. J’y soutiens que sa parole invite à être traitée autrement que comme une narration informant sur son expérience migratoire. Elle est également une parole performative qui agit sur les représentations, notamment de la catégorie « migrant·e·s ».

The central theme of the volume is cultural diversity, a vast subject that is highly relevant today. The particular focus here is on the many ways in which this diversity is managed within the framework of State law. The twelve contributors to this book have a special interest in how cultural traditions and their various forms of expression are handled by the law. They were all participants in the 2009 Research Programme of the Centre for Studies and Research of the (...) Hague Academy of International Law. The breadth of the subject is reflected in the wide spectrum of perspectives from which the topic has been explored. Starting in each case from the existing State and international legal frameworks, the contributors explore how the interactions between positive law and other normative orders can be placed at the service of a legal system that is as fair as possible within a plural context. Contributors were asked to choose from two alternative approaches: either they could look at cultural diversity issues in the field of private (international) law, a fairly traditional field that is especially relevant to the legal treatment of cultural diversity; or they could situate cultural diversity within the wider and more theoretical area of "legal pluralism", whether on a local or regional level or at the international (United Nations) level. _The Foundations of Arithmetic_ is undoubtedly the best introduction to Frege's thought; it is here that Frege expounds the central notions of his philosophy, subjecting the views of his predecessors and contemporaries to devastating analysis. The book represents the first philosophically sound discussion of the concept of number in Western civilization. It profoundly influenced developments in the philosophy of mathematics and in general ontology.

On Kratzer’s canonical account, modal expressions (like “might” and “must”) are represented semantically as quantifiers over possibilities. Such expressions are themselves neutral; they make a single contribution to determining the propositions expressed across a wide range of uses. What modulates the modality of the proposition expressed—as bouletic, epistemic, deontic, etc.—is context.2 This ain’t the canon for nothing. Its power lies in its ability to figure in a simple and highly unified explanation of a fairly wide range of language use. Recently, (...) though, the canon’s neat story has come under attack. The challenge cases involve the epistemic use of a modal sentence for which no single resolution of the contextual parameter appears capable of accommodating all our intuitions.3 According to these revisionaries, such cases show that the canonical story needs to be amended in some way that makes multiple bodies of information relevant to the assessment of such statements. Here I show that how the right canonical, flexibly contextualist account of modals can accommodate the full range of challenge cases. Austin takes on the problem of other minds, of how to respond to the question ‘how do you know?’, if this question is raised with regard to the thoughts, feelings, sensations, minds of other creatures. This problem has traditionally been understood as the problem of justifying our belief in the existence of other minds. Austin argues that believing in other persons, in authority and testimony, is an essential part of the act of communicating, and as such is an irreducible part (...) of our experience. While we can state certain advantages of communicative performances, there is no justification for our doing them as such. (shrink)

What considerations place genuine constraints on an adequate semantics for normative and evaluative expressions? Linguists recognize facts about ordinary uses of such expressions and competent speakers’ judgments about which uses are appropriate. The contemporary literature reflects the widespread assumption that linguists don’t rely upon an additional source of data—competent speakers’ judgments about possible disagreement with hypothetical speech communities. We have several good reasons to think that such judgments are not probative for semantic theorizing. Therefore, we should accord these judgments no (...) probative value for the development of a semantics for our moral terms. Such judgments can no longer be presumed to put pressure on theories according to which our moral expressions share a semantics with ordinary, descriptive terms. Many rivals to pure, Descriptivist theories count among their advantages the ability to accommodate these judgments. If these judgments have no probative value, such theories lose an important source of support. (shrink)

On the meta-level, ‘A Plea for Excuses’, sometimes regarded as the manifesto of ordinary language philosophy, illustrates Austin’s method of approaching philosophical issues, by patiently analysing the subtleties of ordinary language, by example. On the object level, the key distinction with regard to human actions that appear to be worthy of blame, Austin holds to be between a justification, which denies that the performed action was wrong, and an excuse, which instead denies that the agent was responsible for performing it. (...) Austin gives careful attention to particular cases of exculpatory speech, including precise word order and varying emphasis, etymological studies, and the special function of adverbial qualifying phrases, and shows how legal precedents and abnormal psychology may also be helpful in understanding why some efforts to excuse fail. In the final analysis, excuses are properly seen as setting limits to the ascription of moral responsibility, by stating explicitly how they differ from the more usual cases. (shrink)

The old ritual word macte was only vaguely understood even in Republican times. As is well known, the ancient critics connected the word with magis, magnus, and explained it as magis auctus. A glance at Walde's Wörterbuch reveals that many attempts have been made in modern times to solve the mystery; but the formidable equipment of the modern philologist has yielded little better results than the popular etymology of the ancients, the most favoured view to-day seeing in mactus the PPP (...) of a verb mago with macto as the frequentative which replaces it. The supposed semantic development of this verb, originally meaning ‘to increase’, has been set forth by Warde Fowler in a well-known passage, to which recent authorities have accorded their assent and praise: ‘the vitality of the deity … was really increased by placing on the altar the organs of life of the victim’. But this is a solution which ignores half the problem: macte and mactare are used not only of the deities but also of the victim. One can perhaps understand lovem mactare as ‘to magnify J.’, but not even by the most superficial analogy can we find a transition from here to the meaning typified in mactare vinum. Yet this is one of the most frequent usages of the word. So deep a gulf lies between the two semantic spheres of the verb that some scholars have sought to find in it two different verbs. But this is a counsel of despair which the editor of the Thesaurus dismisses with a non recte. We must agree, then, with Hey that the modern explanation is ‘sicher eine unrichtige’ and with Meillet-Ernout that there exists ‘aucune étymologie claire’. It is, therefore, surprising that so ill-founded a preconception should lead investigators to ignore or even dismiss important evidence which the ancient authorities offer for the solution of this problem. In many places and times, and for many people, God's existence has been rather less than a clear fact. According to the hiddenness argument, this is actually a reason to suppose that it is not a fact at all. The hiddenness argument is a new argument for atheism that has come to prominence in philosophy over the past two decades. J. L. Schellenberg first developed the argument in 1993, and this book offers a short and vigorous statement of its central (...) claims and ideas. Logically sharp but so clear that anyone can understand, the book addresses little-discussed issues such as why it took so long for hiddenness reasoning to emerge in philosophy, and how the hiddenness problem is distinct from the problem of evil. It concludes with the fascinating thought that retiring the last of the personal gods might leave us nearer the beginning of religion than the end. (shrink)
